Preface: Against Diatribe protocol I’ve decided to review this album. You see, we don’t normally review last year’s albums this year. However, after hearing this album I felt it was my due-diligence to make sure this made it into the Diatribe archives.
From my best research I found that this group was formed by Mr. and Mrs. Jon Sebastian. The couple essentially formed the band out of boredom and writers block on Jon’s behalf. So being the sweet and loving husband that he is, he taught his wife, Psalm Sebastian, how to play drums and away they went. She in this case is now a sturdy drummer, and also apparently a muse for her husband’s writer’s block. Anyhow, before this turns into a human interest piece or a Lifetime channel movie, let’s get to the music already shall we?
Although very short, and simply constructed, The Color Wheels are quite the charmers. The basic 4/4 beats and soothing vocals provide visceral imagery of happy-go-lucky song writers, and confident musicians. Ah, the power of love. The innocents in the lyrical content saves this album from being lumped into a group of sappy emo, or crappy misunderstood indie-rockers. I suspect that most of the lyrics are reflective of the couples own story together. This really adds validity when juxtaposed to all of the hollow bullshit that kids are writing about today.
No my friends, these birds are just simple rock musicians. If you’re starved for a genera at this point then I’ll make one up for you. Post-feel-good-rock. These are just simple songs about love. Ok, I really need to stop drinking when reviewing albums. Songs to listen for include but are not limited to: “Rock My World”, “Superjet”, “Hot For Teacher”. Enjoy.
